Some guy hacked up a steam client and reversed the steam client, gave it his own branding and what not, all running out of his own server (so speeds were slow) but if someone had the cache (appdata) then you could run the game as it called the steam dll, saw it was legit and played the game. (Pacsteam) as it was known (been years since been near them now) Well years ago you had the “cafe clients” that were basically cafe accounts being shared, that was fun, hacking was rampant across all valve games and networks because cheats could avoid a VAC ban so was upto source bans to catch them out and that was frustraiting.
